The same logic holds true for the Canadian medical licensing exams, administered by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC). In Ontario, access to lab tests, medical imaging, specialists, and surgeries is reduced due to staff shortages and a lack of a coordinated pathway. There is no centralized method of referrals that covers all specialists in Ontario, and there also needs to be a better process to fund complex and specialist procedures. The current funding system through OHIP does not recognize the complexity involved in many of the procedures performed. Shortages of specialists complicate the ability to access care, such as surgery. Currently, there is a critical shortage of anesthesiologists, amongst many specialities. The report quotes that “more than half (59%) of Ontario hospital anesthesiology chiefs reported operating room closures in the last six months due to anesthesiologist vacancies.” What should be done? Here are Ontario Medical Association's solutions, summarized:​​​​​​​​​ 1. Centralized referral Ontario needs a system that covers the entire province and specialties. What the government must do: 📌 Create a centralized referral system where wait times, details of the specialty, and location are provided. 📌 This will help coordinate patient care between family medicine, specialists, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and more. 2. Specialist team-based-care Team-based-care models can help improve access to diagnostics, specialty, and surgical care. This can support issues of capacity similar to what is seen in family medicine. What the government must do: 📌 Fund the specialized care training and hiring of teams to help reduce wait times. 3. Take the bureaucracy out of OHIP Adequate funding must be provided for the care clinical teams provide. Outdated codes that do not match the care provided is unfair to the teams and the system. CMBES is proud to highlight its recent position statement on Health Technology Right to Repair.  The Right to Repair health technology by Canada's Biomedical Engineering professionals is essential for safe and timely care of Canadians. Some medical equipment manufacturers are increasingly restricting the Right to Repair in order to monetize service and are using unsubstantiated claims of patient safety or even false claims that their restrictions are required by regulations.  There is significant and substantiated information that disproves this and actually highlights how critical it is to provide service parts, manuals etc. to non-manufacturer Biomedical Engineering professionals (e.g., the 2018 FDA Report on the Quality, Safety and Effectiveness of Servicing of Medical Devices which analyzed over 2,000,000 events and demonstrated there is no risk of non-manufacturer repair and in fact goes onto say the sustainability of the health care system relies on it). CMBES will develop a FAQ section that answers common public questions around Medical Equipment Right to Repair and provides substantiated facts to ensure the public understands the risk medical equipment manufacturers are causing them, when they attempt to monetize service by restricting the ability of Canadian Biomedical Engineering professionals to rapidly investigate, service and manage Canada's Health Technology. CMBES invites all members of our community - including in-house BME/CE professionals, vendors, manufacturers, service providers, and others - to embrace a collaborative approach, which will optimize our support of Canada’s medical technology and ultimately safe and timely patient care.

Thanks to Jessica Thomson and David Jones of Health Canada for recently providing a technical briefing to the medtech community on Bill C-72, the Connected Care for Canadians Act. The webinar introduced Bill C-72, how it is aiming to improve access to health information in Canada and discussed its implications for patient safety and health care outcomes. Medtech innovators are ever increasingly developing digital health solutions, so this webinar was timely and insightful. Our association is also very supportive of increasing access to Canadian health care data to improve patient outcomes and to enhance the ability of medtech industry to support the needs of the Canadian health care system.

LMP’s Quality Council aims to standardize testing across GTA hospital labs through several projects. Project 1, led by Dr. Paul Yip & Dr. Corwyn Rowsell aims to harmonize quality indicators across hospital-based clinical labs.    Quality indicators allow laboratories to quantify the quality of laboratory processes, which is fundamental to patient safety. Harmonization of quality indicators is necessary to ensure that all clinical laboratories define, report and benchmark according to defined quality standards.  🔬     Dr. Yip commented, “Increased collaboration across U of T-affiliated hospitals enables new benchmarking of laboratory quality through a national platform.  Over the past few years, 11 healthcare organizations representing 18 hospitals have joined the Core Lab Quality Indictors working group. With better tools for data analytics at the local and global level, we have a comparative view of leading indicators that impact on patient safety. Together, we are addressing common underlying themes where clinical laboratories play key roles with our healthcare partners to reduce errors and improve outcomes.
